Sleep Cycles Explained
Sleep isn't a flat "off" state — it's an active, structured process that repeats in cycles. Understanding those cycles is the key to waking up feeling good instead of groggy. Here's what happens each night, and why counting in 90-minute blocks can change your mornings.
What is a sleep cycle?
A sleep cycle is one full pass through the different stages of sleep. In healthy adults, a cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes (anywhere from 70 to 120 minutes is normal). Over a typical night, you complete four to six of these cycles, with the mix of stages shifting as the night goes on.
Each cycle moves through two main types of sleep: NREM (non-REM) and REM (rapid eye movement). NREM itself has lighter and deeper phases. Here's what each does.
The stages of sleep
- Light sleep (N1 & N2): the transition into sleep and the largest portion of the night. Your body relaxes, heart rate slows, and you can be woken fairly easily.
- Deep sleep (N3, slow-wave sleep): the most physically restorative stage. This is when your body repairs tissue, strengthens the immune system, and builds memories. Waking from deep sleep feels disorienting and groggy — the dreaded "sleep inertia."
- REM sleep: where most vivid dreaming happens. Your brain is almost as active as when awake, processing emotion and consolidating learning, while your voluntary muscles are temporarily relaxed (likely a safety mechanism so you don't act out dreams).
How the night unfolds
Early cycles are deeper — your body prioritises slow-wave sleep in the first half of the night. REM periods get longer toward morning. That's why you often remember dreams from your last cycle, and why cutting sleep short steals mostly REM, which matters for memory and mood.
Why cycles change how you feel waking up
Imagine your alarm goes off in the middle of deep sleep. Even after eight hours, you feel terrible — heavy, confused, slow to start. Now imagine waking at the boundary between two cycles, often during lighter sleep. That same person might feel clear and ready after a touch less sleep, simply because the wake-up landed better.
This is the entire logic behind sleep-cycle timing: aim to wake near the end of a cycle, not inside one.
How to use sleep cycles in practice
- Work back from your wake-up time. If you must rise at 7:00 AM, counting back in 90-minute blocks (and allowing ~15 minutes to fall asleep) gives you target bedtimes that end on a cycle boundary.
- Prefer full cycles. Sleeping 7.5 hours (5 cycles) often feels better than 8 hours (which lands mid-cycle) for some people.
- Don't obsess over perfection. Cycles vary in length and aren't a clockwork machine. Treat them as a helpful guide, not a guarantee.
- Protect the second half of the night. That's where most REM lives — so a full night isn't just about quantity, it's about giving REM space to do its job.
